Rumour: Dairy products increase the risk of diabetes.
Truth: This is true.
Dairy products are an important food group and have many health benefits. They include milk products such as yogurt, cheese, and butter. Most individuals consume at least one dairy product per day.
Researchers in the Netherlands conducted a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition to identify the effects of different types of dairy products on the development of pre-diabetes and diabetes. For the study, they examined skimmed, semi-skimmed, full-fat, fermented, and non-fermented dairy products. Full-fat dairy products such as chocolate milk and non-fermented dairy products such as custard were associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
