The Healthy Gut Bacteria Rumour

Rumour: Probiotics fight fatty liver disease.

Truth: This is true. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFD) is a prevalent liver disorder that was initially managed through lifestyle modifications, such as adopting a healthy diet and regularly exercising. As such, adults with a low body mass index and NAFD had difficulty effectively managing the disorder.

A recent research article published in the British Journal of Nutrition recommends that individuals consume synbiotics, which are a combination of probiotics and prebiotics, to manage NAFD. This recommendation is specifically directed towards individuals with NAFD and a low body mass index, however, all individuals with NAFD can benefit. Consumption of synbiotics was proven to manage the immune response that sustained fatty liver symptoms.
