(1) (1850) Faroese-Danish physician Niels Ryberg Finsen is born. He won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his contribution to the treatment of diseases like lupus using light radiation.

(2) (1916) New Zealand-born British physicist and molecular biologist Maurice Wilkins is born. He is best known for his work on the structure of DNA.

(3) (1933) the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution officially becomes effective, which repealed 18th Amendment that prohibited selling, manufacturing and transporting alcohol.
