(1764) English surgeon John Abernethy is born. He is known for inventing the Abernethy biscuit, which is used to help digestion.

(1778) French medical doctor Pierre-Fidèle Bretonneau is born. He is known for identifying typhoid fever, naming diphtheria, and was the first to believe that diseases can be caused by bacteria.

(1860) Dutch writer and psychiatrist Frederik van Eeden is born. He coined the term lucid dream and studied cases of mental illness.
