(1780) English physician, plant collector and philanthropist John Fothergill passes away. As a physician, he treated many patients during the influenza epidemic and created one of the first descriptions of streptococcal sore throat.

(1869) French physicist and physiologist Jean Léonard Marie Poiseuille passes away. He is known for formulating an equation applied to laminar flow, commonly used to measure blood flow in the veins.

(1898) The Curies announce the isolation of radium, which releases radiation as it decays.
