(1939) American chemist and inventor Mary-Dell Chilton was born. With her colleagues, she developed the first genetically modified plant using Agrobacterium Ti plasmid DNA.

(1980) American biochemist William Howard Stein passes away. His research focused on amino acids and the ribonuclease protein, which is able to degrade RNA into smaller fragments.
