Today In Medical History – January 17

(1501) German physician and botanist Leonhart Fuchs was born. He is most known for creating a herbal book, where he wrote and drew about plants and their use as medicines.

(1666) Italian anatomist Antonio Maria Valsalva was born. He is credited with developing the Valsalva maneuver, the process of trying to blow air out of your nose while it is plugged in order to clear the airways of the ears.

(1834) German evolutionary biologist August Weismann was born. His biggest contribution was the germ plasm theory, which states that inheritance only occurs through germ cells.
