(1808) American pioneer, doctor, and businessman David Swinson Maynard is born. He travelled St. Louis to California fighting cholera and preventing malnutrition in natives.

(1924) Scottish surgeon William Macewen passes away. He is remembered for his contributions to brain surgery and bone graft surgery.

(2010) Scottish pharmacologist James Black passses away. He shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the development of propranolol and cimetidine, medications used for heart disease and stomach ulcers, respectively.
