(1633) Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini is born. He is known for his contributions to the field of occupational diseases and for advocating the use of cinchona bark for malaria treatment.

(1749) Scottish physician, chemist and botanist Daniel Rutherford is born. He is most known for isolating nitrogen in 1772.

(1933) French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist Pierre Paul Émile Roux passes away. He was the co-founder of the Pasteur Institute, and also produced the first effective therapy for diphtheria.
