(1) (1930) American physician and cardiologist Robert Atkins is born. He is most famously known for inventing the Atkins Diet, a controversial diet that claims to promote weight loss.
(2) (1931) German neurologist Alfons Jakob passes away. He is most famously remembered for being the first recognize and describe Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, a degenerative neurological disease that is known as the human form of mad cow disease.
(3) (1956) American physician and NASA astronaut Mae Jemison is born. As an astronaut, she was the co-investigator for two bone cell research experiments while onboard.
