(1) (1688) English surgeon and teacher of anatomy William Cheselden is born. He influenced the establishment of surgery as a scientific medical profession.
(2) (1897) Pakistani organic chemist Salimuzzaman Siddiqui is born. He is known for bringing the antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties of the Neem tree to the attention of natural product chemists.
(3) (1943) Streptomycin, which was the first antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis, is isolated by Rutgers University researchers.
