(1) (1866) French bacteriologist Charles Nicolle is born. He is known for discovering that lice is responsible for transmitting typhus, and also for his research in cancer, measles, and influenza.
(2) (1906) American plant breeder Henry Beachell is born. He is known for conducting research on hybrid rice, which saved millions of people worldwide from starvation.
(3) (1918) American scientist and advocate John Gofman is born. He led a research team that demonstrated the role of lipoproteins in causing heart disease.
